The Seattle Symphony has made the difficult decision to cancel the December 30 and January 2 & 3 performances of Beethoven Symphony No. 9. In-person concerts with a live audience continue to be suspended until King County is safely in Phase 4 of the state’s reopening plan. All ticket holders will be notified.
Associate Conductor of the Seattle Symphony and winner of the Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award in 2014, 2017 and 2019, Lee Mills is internationally recognized as a passionate, multifaceted and energetic conductor. In his previous position as Resident Conductor of the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra, he led performances hailed as having a “sonority of unequalled liveliness and quality” (movimento.com), working alongside such artists as Simone Porter, Conrad Tao, Eliane Coelho and the Smetana Trio.
Joseph Adam is Resident Organist for the Seattle Symphony. He has been Cathedral Organist at St. James Cathedral in Seattle since 1993.
Laura Strickling was praised by The New York Times for her, “flexible voice, crystalline diction, and warm presence.” A devoted recitalist, she curated The New Music Shelf Anthology for Soprano, and has appeared with the Brooklyn Art Song Society, Yellow Barn Music Festival, New Music Gathering, Lyric Fest of Philadelphia, Trinity Concerts at One, the American Liszt Society, and has presented guest artist recitals at the University of Georgia, Mercer University, College of William and Mary, Mercer University, University of Notre Dame, and Pittsburg State University.
With a voice that has been called “pure gold,” and dramatic gifts that place her in the first rank of singer-actors, American mezzo-soprano Mary Phillips is closely associated with the music of Wagner. She sings many mezzo roles in the Ring cycle and made her acclaimed role debut as Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde for Dallas Opera, as well as returning to the Metropolitan Opera as Schwertleite in Die Walküre, in which she also covered the role of Fricka. She has sung Fricka and Waltraute in Die Walküre and Waltraute in Götterdämmerung at Canadian Opera; Erda in the Scottish Opera’s Ring, and Wellgunde and Rossweise in Seattle Opera’s Ring cycles.
Described by The Boston Globe as “one of the world’s most remarkable singers,” American tenor Nicholas Phan is increasingly recognized as an artist of distinction. Praised for his keen intelligence, captivating stage presence and natural musicianship, he performs regularly with the world’s leading orchestras and opera companies. Also an avid recitalist, in 2010 he co-founded the Collaborative Arts Institute of Chicago (CAIC) to promote art song and vocal chamber music, where he serves as artistic director.
New Zealand baritone Hadleigh Adams has been featured in Opera News magazine as a Soundbyte artist and has received international acclaim for his performances on stage and in concert. He is renowned for his dynamic stage presence and ability to draw true, honest characters in his performances. His broad repertoire spans from Baroque and Bel Canto through Britten and to contemporary composition. He has collaborated with some of today’s greatest artists on the concert platform, and on the opera stage.
