Seattle Parks and Recreation presents the annual Teen Summer Musical,
“Uncle Willy’s Chocolate Factory.”
The program that we have come to know as the Teen Summer Musical (TSM) has been in existence since 1997. Over the years it has attracted hundreds of youth between the ages of nine and eighteen. Participants dedicate 9 weeks of their summer, Monday-Friday, 9AM-5PM to do what they love; perform. During which time the budding entertainers develop self-confidence, self-discipline and self-motivation skills. These transferrable tools are essential to the growth of all young people as they are in the “hope stage” of their maturation. Under the tutelage of a staff of professional artists the students engage in theatre games & exercises, vocal training and dance rehearsals which also creates a bond of trust and support.
This unique theater experience provides the 65 youth (primarily) of color with an introduction into the professional world of entertainment. Most notably culminating in 6 performances at a major venue. Past Seattle theatre houses include; The Seattle Repertory, The Moore Theatre, The Paramount and Benaroya Hall.
The TSM script is typically an adaptation of an American classic such as Cinderella, Peter Pan or Snow White. Traditionally these roles are played by Caucasian actors. The Musical makes it possible for people of color not only to be cast as principal characters but perform on stages that national entertainers have graced. The importance of this component reflects a look through the racial equity lens and promotes self-worth. That sense of pride continues with the teenagers by being recipients of a stipend once the final curtain falls.
Please come support these talented young people in the production of, “Uncle Willy’s Chocolate Factory” held at the Benaroya Hall, 200 University St., August 22nd-August 25th, 2019.
“Uncle Willy’s Chocolate Factory” is an adaptation of the book, “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl. “Uncle Willy’s” was Written and Directed by Isiah Anderson Jr., Music by Michelle Lang and Choreography by Tyrone “Koach T” Crosby.
