Tuning Up! Festival Photo Contest

Our summer music festival celebrates American musical creativity! We want to celebrate your photographic creativity in one of the concerts using Philip Glass’ The Light as your source of inspiration. Winning photos will be projected during the performance!

Your Challenge

Philip Glass was inspired by the Michelson–Morley experiment, which demonstrated that light has a uniform speed. This was an important scientific discovery that eventually led to Albert Einstein’s theory of special relativity.

For the contest, listen to The Light by Philip Glass, below, and share an image of something you’ve made in response to the piece.

Every few days we’ll announce a new creative prompt to help you get started, although you do not have to strictly adhere to the prompts. You are welcome to submit as many times as you want using the different prompts as inspiration.

The winning entries will have their work displayed on a high-definition screen in Benaroya Hall during the Seattle Symphony’s performance of The Light and will receive two complimentary tickets to the concert, The Light That Fills the World, on Thursday, June 30, at 7:30pm.

Creative Prompt #1: Color

Explore ways to translate the bright triads and pulsing music of The Light by Philip Glass into an image or drawing. Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • Seek out unexpected splashes of color during your daily commute.
  • Assign each instrument a color and create what you hear.
  • Take a photo featuring a dazzling array of colors.

Share your entries using #TheLightSSO on Instagram and Twitter or by posting them directly on the Seattle Symphony’s Facebook page with the contest hashtag.
